Dundee Video Games: From Lemmings to Grand Theft Auto
Contents
In 1991 a small company in Dundee released a game about tiny green-haired creatures marching blindly towards cliffs, which the player had to save by giving them jobs. Lemmings sold millions of copies and made Dundee a name in the world of games. Six years later the same company, DMA Design, released Grand Theft Auto, which went on to become one of the most successful and controversial entertainment franchises ever made. Dundee, a city of jute and shipbuilding, became one of Britain's games capitals, with a university that offered some of the first games degrees. This card tells how.

A Note on Claims and Evidence
Each major claim carries one of three labels. established means supported by primary records, official bodies or several independent reliable sources. shared means the core fact is sound but sources disagree on details, dates or interpretation. traditional means widely repeated but not traceable to a primary or independent source.
Sales figures for games are often reported by publishers in round numbers and change over time, so this card avoids precise totals. The claim that Abertay offered the "world's first" games degree is widely made but hard to verify.

Details
Spectrums and teenagers
established In the early 1980s the American firm Timex manufactured Sinclair home computers, including the ZX81 and ZX Spectrum, at its factory in Dundee. Cheap home computers inspired young people across Britain to write games, and in Dundee a group of enthusiasts formed around a local computer club. David Jones, who had worked at Timex, founded DMA Design in 1988.
Lemmings
established DMA's early games for the Amiga, Menace (1988) and Blood Money (1989), were published by the Liverpool company Psygnosis. In 1991 Psygnosis released DMA's Lemmings, a puzzle game in which the player must assign tasks, such as digging, blocking and building bridges, to small creatures that otherwise walk mindlessly to their deaths. Charming and addictive, it was released on almost every gaming platform and sold millions of copies.
Grand Theft Auto
established In 1997 DMA released Grand Theft Auto, a top-down game in which players commit crimes in a city. Its publicity deliberately courted outrage, and it was condemned by politicians and campaigners. DMA was bought by Take-Two Interactive in 1999 and became Rockstar North, moving to Edinburgh. Its later games, including Grand Theft Auto V (2013), have been among the best-selling and highest-grossing entertainment products in the world.
shared The series has repeatedly been accused of glorifying violence, crime and misogyny, and has faced lawsuits and attempts to restrict its sale. Defenders argue it is satire and that research does not show such games cause real-world violence. The debate continues.
Abertay and the games city
established In 1997 the University of Abertay Dundee launched a degree in computer games technology, among the first in the world. It became a leading centre for games education and research, helping make Dundee a hub for game development. Companies in the city have included 4J Studios, which created the console editions of Minecraft, Realtime Worlds, whose ambitious online game APB failed in 2010, and studios making mobile games.
Recognition
established In 2014 Dundee became the UK's first UNESCO City of Design, with its games industry cited as part of its creative strength. V&A Dundee, opened in 2018, has featured video game design in its exhibitions.
